Reasons for Program closure through CJ.com
The reason for this is because due to the US Gaming Bill that was passed, Astrobingo.com (US arm) was forced to close. CJ.com is primarily US based and is also governed by US laws. Cj.com had to implement a program change in our terms and conditions in order to comply with the new US online gaming ban (PDF). This meant that any affiliate that was promoting astrobingo.co.uk had to ensure they were not purposely targeting US citizens. The program changes are a physical procedure that affiliates can either accept or reject or in most cases were ignored. The consequences of the program change meant that affiliates who were owed commission, if they had accepted the program changes, all would be and is fine and will continue to receive commission as always. For the affiliates who rejected or ignored the new terms, CJ.com system does not allow them to receive commission until the action of accepting the program terms is completed. In other words, for the affiliate its an all or nothing scenario.“Unfortunately, as I explained, this is due to legal reasons and publishers willing to promote Betting/Gaming advertisers have to accept the Terms and Conditions and if they have not done so, they will not be able to earn commissions from you.” (Cj.com rep)
The upshot of this has been, we have outstanding commissions waiting to be allocated to affiliates but we physically can’t pay them via Cj.com, it’s such an odd situation to be in, we want to pay our affiliates and for some we can’t. Needless to say, this goes against the ethos of affiliateprogramadvice.com, Astrobingo Management and I dare say CJ.com are probably not too happy about this either and hopefully they will now be looking at a better way to incorporate program changes on an active affiliate program (tough one), we are not pointing the finger of blame at CJ.com as their hands were tied and they were advised by their legal department.
But we have lost affiliates and cant pay others. In addition to this, we dont know what’s around the corner, so we feel it would be prudent to remain in UK waters with UK networks, we cant take the risk of having any more program changes and not being able to pay our affiliates.
Affiliates who have not accepted the program changes via CJ.com, we urge you to do so, this way you get paid what is owed before our program closes which is on 26th September 07.
