CJ Java Link Update
Having spoken to one of reps at Cj.com, I now have a clearer idea of why the changes in links. Without going into specifics, the reason for change will become evident as time goes by and does feature heavily with regards to the future ways in which affiliates will be able to promote CJ.com merchants. There is also an element of brand protection and keeping content fresh but is not the primary motive.
I suspect that the decision to change linking methods was not taken lightly and the need for change outweighed a possibility of CJ.com loosing revenue by making such a move. By pre-announcing this move, which I believe was a very good move on their part, this will allow affiliates adequate time to change over their immediate links and I suspect Cj.com’s revenue loss to be minimal or at the very least in the short term. I am uncertain of what financialimpactt this may have on affiliates though. I don’t think Cj.com are under any illusion that this will not be a momentous task for some affiliates to swap links and I suspect measures are being or will be put in place to ensure a smooth transition.
The changes are going to happen and I dare say there will be some opposition. Because affiliates use different kinds of software and databases, CJ.com will be giving you guidance on how to adapt. If google changes its algorithms tomorrow, we all have to adapt or look for alternatives, samscenarioio here.
I did express my concerns about the general level of communication and it has been noted :0)
I believe, reading between the lines of the conversation I had… that any links that have not been changed (talking about the ones from years ago that perhaps have long been forgotten but still bring in a bit of cash) commissions will still be paid for an interim period, of what length I don’t know. (I have also been informed by an out side source that HTML will continue to remain with exsisting advertisers for a further year) I would strongly advise to keep an eye open for all communication about this and if you have specific questions, post em here and Ill try and get some answers for you.
To summariseThe Change is happening and in a nutshell its adapt or switch links, I suspect for most it will be the first, for some it will be the second and then back to the first. It’s going to be a pain to swap links any way you look at it. Once the changes have been made I would envisage that Cj.com will not be doing anything like this again on this scale for a while, at least let’s hope not.
Cj.com I don’t think have lost the plot on this occasion but I will be watching this one with interest.
This is the email that I recieved from CJ vis a vis my clients
Dear Jessica,
We recently announced the release of the Link Management Initiative (LMI) planned for June 23, 2006. While the changes introduced by this initiative deliver considerable benefits, we understand some of our clients may need more time to plan for and implement the required changes. As your partner in affiliate marketing, Commission Junction is therefore extending the availability of Legacy links to all publishers in the CJ Marketplace. On June 23, 2006, JavaScript links will become Commission Junction’s default link type in the CJ Marketplace. However, we will continue to offer Legacy links through the beginning of 2007. The Legacy links will be available for all your advertiser relationships, including those joined to before and after June 23, 2006. At this time we have not scheduled a date for which the Legacy links will no longer be available or supported. We will notify you at least six months in advance of making this change and will not require the change during the 2006 holiday season.Though you will have the option to use Legacy links, we encourage you to start using the new JavaScript links as soon as possible, to take advantage of the benefits planned as part of the LMI. Please check our online FAQs frequently, as we will regularly update them and provide more documentation on the changes introduced with the LMI (login required). We are confident that the features delivered with the LMI will provide long-term opportunity and success for your program. We recommend taking the additional time provided to understand the changes and continue to build sustainable relationships in the CJ Marketplace.Regards,Commission Junction, a ValueClick company
