Tech Geeks – Clever but Lazy?
After many a chat over a beer or two over the years it has occurred to me that some of my techy geek friends do have a flaw. Whilst they do have the edge in crafting scripts to do all sorts of things to save time and money, I’ve found that if they can’t find a script or scrape solution they drop it and move on.
Now this is something that I’m grateful for as they do leave an opening for us less then savvy techies who are quite willing to put in the boring laborious work to get what we want. Now when I tell them that I took 3 months putting together a database for a music site they regale me with that “are you crazy?” look, but when I ask them if they could have done it with a script the simple answer is no.
So the point to this little article is that technology and ingenuity can take you a long way, but sometimes you just have to get your hands dirty to get what you want. The other thing to think about is if it took me that long to build, it’s a pretty sure bet that no-one else is going to bother, that’s why that database content makes my site unique and we all know that unique content is king..

Great post and I agree totally. Original code is hard to find with any online venture. Even Microsoft bought their code source for DOS from someone else, thus launching their success. Ebay, Digg and even Amazon were all originally built on common code/scripts. It’s not about the code sometimes, but what you do with it and the users experience. And the paradox is that most people do not have a computer science degree and 20 years in C++. So we take what works and make it better for what we need it for. If you’re rebuilding a car do you build it completely from scratch from just a pile of metal, and become an engineer, RnD and metal fabricator…most likely no. You buy an old Chevy and put your own skill into fixing it up, because at the end of the day it’s all about the function and tasks and goals – while looking pretty.
