“Robertson’s rant is like Ratner revisited
\nHas Nick Robertson, the chief exec of internet retailer ASOS, done a Gerald Ratner?
\nHe’s told trade mag New Media Age that the company’s online advertising agents are “grubby little people in grubby studios growing income at our expense”.
\nThat’s an interesting way to talk about your friends, and it’s caused an almighty stink on the net, so what’s the company got to say now?
\n“This was taken out of context,” smooths a spokesman.
\nHow, exactly?
\n“Well, I don’t know. I wasn’t there. But Nick wasn’t saying anything about ASOS, it’s products or its customers so I don’t think you can call it a ‘Ratner’ as such.” He continues to explain that ASOS has stopped using affiliates, “but that doesn’t mean we won’t in the future”. Want to bet?”

Oh dear, they couldn\u2019t say it was a misquote anymore so lets go for \u201cit was taken out of context\u201d even if you dressed it up in pretty bows and slapped a big sign post with a big red arrow pointing and a big purple dinosaur saying, \u201cASOS love Affiliates really, ahhhhhh group hug\u201d there is no context that I can think of where you would use the words grubby + affiliates + grubby little studios + growing income at our expense and still make it look acceptable.<\/p>\n
