Lyle and Scott was founded in The Scottish Borders in September 1874. A loan of \u00a3800 from an Edinburgh based investment company and \u00a3500 from a local corn merchant was used to secure the start of the business. The two entrepreneurs who formed the company were William Lyle and Walter Scott.\"\"<\/a>They began making women\u2019s hosiery and knitted under garments under the trademark Ellaness. Both wool and silk underwear was made and Lyle and Scott quickly gained a reputation for making superior quality products. Within 5-6 years Lyle and Scott had gone from using 2 knitting frames to around 200 hand worked frames and it was time for a much bigger factory.<\/p>\n

Come 1924 Lyle and Scott was thriving in business and set to celebrate 50 years Jubilee on the 18th<\/sup> June. The festivities included a motor run and picnic in the picturesque grounds of nearby Fairnilee House.<\/p>\n

The business evolved and expanded first into knitted outerwear and later the men\u2019s underwear industry too. Lyle and Scott began to produce Jockey Y-fronts as part of a franchise agreement, a move that proved profitable and meant that Lyle and Scott could expand further. All the while Lyle and Scott was still producing the high quality knitwear we\u2019re famous for today.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>In 1954 Lyle and Scott collaborated with Christian Dior on an exclusive line of cashmere knits. Monsieur Dior visited the Lyle and Scott factory and offices in Hawick to finalise the partnership. The Managing Director at the time, Mr Oliver, travelled to America to oversee the distribution of the Lyle and Scott and Christian Dior collaborative line. Oliver\u2019s kooky British sense of style caused a bit of a stir as he walked the streets of California in his bowler hat and holding an umbrella!<\/p>\n

In the 1960s the golden eagle was born and Lyle and Scott entered the golf market. This was a move that was met with strong opposition from competitors, but it didn\u2019t take long for Lyle and Scott to become a well recognized golf brand.<\/p>\n

It was 1975 when Lyle and Scott was awarded a Royal Warrant for appointment to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh who favoured the lambswool sweaters. From this point well in to the 1980s Lyle and Scott\u2019s relationship with golf continued to grow and thrive. In 1981 Lyle and Scott dressed the Ryder Cup team and went on to work with many big names in golf like Sandy Lyle, Gary Player, Tony Jacklin and Greg Norman. When Greg Norman won the Open at Tunberry in 1986 it was the golden eagle which adorned his chest.<\/p>\n

Lyle and Scott modern day<\/strong>
\nIn 2003 the Lyle and Scott Vintage range was launched, it drew on Lyle and Scott\u2019s retro aesthetic and featured the golden eagle on the left chest of each Vintage piece. The golden eagle was soon picked up by some of Britain\u2019s coolest bands of the time including Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian and Bloc Party. Lyle and Scott quickly gained a reputation for making retro inspired pieces with a modern twist. Lyle and Scott had a huge wealth of history to draw on for inspiration and the authenticity of the brand with over 130 years of history quickly made it a favourite with many other celebrities such as Harry Potter star Emma Watson as well as TV presenters and cult TV series such as Skins.<\/p>\n

Again, Lyle and Scott was set for huge growth as the brand was discovered by stores such as Selfridges and Urban Outfitters. Lyle and Scott Vintage keeps up its affiliation with the music industry through \u2018Curated By Lyle and Scott\u2019 which is a series of gigs held around the UK which aims to support and showcase the best emerging music talent.
