US Google Cart or is it Go Cart?

Google Cart in the US only captured 1% of the market.Google Cart has hit the UK and the last two weeks there has been some heavy debates going on about the pros and cons. Most here have adopted a “suck it and see” approach. Some have come out and put their full support behind this new payment gate way. Some have come out strongly against it.

The UK affiliate networks have been nothing short of brilliant with regards to giving merchant’s information and getting themselves google compliance. We are very quick in the UK to point out all the negative things but I think we rarely speak out about the positive things too and considering the way in which google cart was launched, they all rose to the occasion. So well done all of you at the speed in which this was done. Great also to see that you are in dialogue with your merchants.

Im also pleased to hear that most networks will be adding a little extra to their terms and conditions to ensure that affiliates are factored in.

It would appear that as soon as the google customer incentives were stopped to a tune of $60 million dollars invested by google, sales through google cart plummeted. For merchants, the lure of additional incentives to use this payment gate way may have short term benefits, but we only have to look across the pond to the US to see what we in the UK can expect.I wonder if the launch and rush to embrace google cart in the UK is not a little premature?
I would like to know why the consumers stopped using google cart, perhaps they prefer using traditional credit card processing methods, better the devil you know? I dont think there was a consumer trust issue as the free vouchers they got seemed very popular, maybe going via google card instead of a traditional payment gateway was a consumer risk worth taking, the voucher may have bridged that gap of doubt?

Interesting too, is that it’s only small to medium companies that took up the google cart payment gateway, not the big brands and the same can be said for the UK , on this front. Having spoken to one giant online, they felt it would just “lowers the tone and sends out the wrong message to our customers”

The clearest message that has come out of this is, just goes to show you the power of “the freebie and incentives” which still seems to be the main motivation for merchants. I remain skeptical and cautious and would encourage merchants to keep in the back of their minds the old saying, “there is no such thing as a free lunch!”

Could this latest research from the US about google cart be turned into a headline one day entitled “go cart”?
